Habit forming: how to start

Clippy's four habit rules:

1. It should be obvious something needs to change.

2. It should be an attractive habit to adopt.

3. It should be easy to introduce and sustain.

4. It should be satisfying when it becomes part of a daily routine.

  1. Obvious habit - we need to drink 6-8 glasses of fluid per day to stay hydrated, alert and keep our bodies in optimal condition. This can be made of low fat milk, water, tea, coffee, fruit teas, sugar free drinks (although there is debate with regards to UPF drinks).

  1. Attractive habit - if you don’t drink enough fluids, your body can suffer from fatigue, insomnia, constipation & bloating, slow metabolism, gain weight, decreased brain function - the fog, headaches & migraines or even gain weight.

  1. Easy to introduce - upping your fluid intake as part of your daily routine, helps it increase adoption of the habit, it’s readily available and easy to transport

  1. Satisfying - make it part of your daily routine - wake up to a glass of water or hot water & lemon, purchase a drinks canister to encourage drinking, use a water app tracker, even eating 1 medium sized apple has ½ cup of water in it…

At the end of the day regular practice encourages implementation of the new habit into your daily routine…
