I bet you are wondering how on earth “Clippy’s Apples” came about? Well, sit down with a hot drink and I will tell you a little story… Once upon a time there was young lady called Michelle McKenna (that’s me folks) who fell in love with a certain young man. It was this young man who named me “Cliphead” because of my fascination for hairclips. Some years later, “Cliphead” was shortened to “Clippy” by an eccentric German friend of ours, who decided that as we were going to Australia, my nickname should be “Clippy”, instead of Skippy - the bush kangaroo! Nine years later, this name has stuck and everybody I know, including customers, address me as “Clippy”.
This is the story so far, but how did the humble British Apple grab Clippy’s attention? Well, I was researching my PhD proposal on subjects such as the disappearing British orchards; I was also keenly accepting gluts of apples from neighbour’s gardens and making all kinds of cakes & preserves from them. I had a ‘Eureka’ moment when I realised that by combining my interests, I could be a driving force behind the re-emergence of the British Apple, and the Clippy’s Apples brand began to grow in earnest.
Over the last 15 years I have travelled across the globe, savouring the culinary delights of diverse cultures; from crocodile to shrimp burgers; from apple butter to green figs picked from Atlantic cliffs tops; from bohemian cafes in Brussels to camping under the stars in France. These memories have inspired my taste buds to build the unique repertoire of flavour combinations for Clippy’s Apples.
The story doesn't end here; the love of my life, Paul Gorman, also commonly known as 'The Gormanator' has succumbed to the dark side (not literally) and is now helping to grow Clippy’s Apples Empire...
